Jesus is worthy Jesus is worthy of honour and glory. He is worthy of praise. He always has been worthy of honour, glory and praise but when He died on the cross and rose again He showed how worthy He is. And in Heaven everyone is far more aware of this than on earth because those who live there know more than anyone else how their very presence there depended on Jesus doing what He came to earth to do, die on the cross in punishment for our sins. So when they saw Jesus as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah and King and kings and Lord of lords they also saw Him as the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world. And John who saw the vision of this when he was a prisoner on Patmos island for his faith in Jesus would soon afterwards been with Jesus and a part of those who worship Him. John's presence in Heaven would also have been dependant on Jesus dying on the cross because if Jesus had not died none of us would be able to go to Heaven. So let's read what John saw in his vision in Revelation 5. Then I saw in the right Hand of Him Who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in Heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if It had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven Horns and seven Eyes, which are the Seven Spirits (or the Holy Spirit) of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right Hand of Him Who sat on the throne. And when He had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because You were slain, and with Your Blood You purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.” Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!” Then I heard every creature in Heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: "To Him Who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped. It is very hard for us to imagine just how beautiful, majestic, awesome, holy, bright and wonderful God is. Yet Jesus gave up all that glory to come to earth to die on the cross in punishment for our sins. That, amongst innumerable other things, is why He is worthy to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise. John saw Jesus as King. He also saw, no doubt, the holes in His Hands and His Feet and the gash in His Side. Which is what we will see and it will always remind us of what Jesus did for us. It will remind us that we were only allowed into Heaven because of Jesus. It will remind us of how worthy Jesus is. "To Him Who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!” |

Hebrews 4 Therefore, since the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in My anger, And yet His works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all His works.” And again in the passage above He says, “They shall never enter My rest.” Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, God again set a certain day, calling it 'Today.' This He did when a long time later He spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: 'Today, if you hear his voice, |

Hebrews 4 - we are doing a series on Hberews which you can access on the page Jesus in the Book of Hebrews God told the Israelites through Moses that He would lead them to the promised land which was where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had lived. If you recall, Jacob's sons sold their brother, Joseph, into slavery in Egypt where he afterwards became second only to Pharoah. There was a drought which lasted seven years and he brought his father and brothers into Egypt. But after Joseph died the Israelites were not regarded well in Egypt and Pharoah tried to get rid of them. God raised Moses to lead them from their lives of slavery and miraculously brought them out of Egypt. God promised them that He would take them to Canaan and give them the countries there but they kept complaining aginst God and worshipped a gold calf they persuaded the brother of Moses, Aaron, to make. God told them in the end that none of them would go into Canaan though their children would. In the end it took forty years to travel into Canaan, a journey which would only have taken a few months. So the original people who were saved by God from slavery in the land of Egypt did not enter the promised land because of their disobedience. We read in Hebrews 3 how God said to them, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” But, as we said, they did harden their heart and they did not enter into God's rest, the promised land of Canaan. At the end of chapter three we read, "Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? And to whom did God swear that they would never enter His rest if not to those who disobeyed? So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.” "Therefore," the writer of Hebrews says at the beginning of Hebrews four. He is referring back to the Israelites who did not enter into God's rest and telling the readers of Hebrews that they must also be careful not to have fallen short of the rest of God. So what is that rest for us? It is not going into Canaan but it is something equally real and something which God has promised His people, a rest. It is not only real it is also good news. It is an active rest which we have if we have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive Him into our lives. The problem is people may have good news proclaimed to them but that does not mean they will accept what is offered them. The offer of rest is open to us but we can fall short of it. And, in fact, this happens. We see it all the time. The message of love and hope is given to people but they will not receive Jesus and therefore cannot enter into God's rest. Because of disobedience to God's Word they never receive God's rest, in the same way as the Israelites who kept disobeying God did not enter Canaan. So what is this rest that God offers? It is rest from our works and acceptance of what Jesus has done on the cross for us. It is acceptance of Him. It is the realisation that we can work until the cows come home to try to get to Heaven but we will fail. It is the acceptance that God has done all the work because there is no other way. A holy, perfect God cannot accept sin and we are sinners. Jesus died on the cross in order to give us a chance to be accepted by God. When we receive Him our sins are forgiven and we leave behind the turmoil of a life without God. We enter the rest which comes from the peace God gives us in Jesus. We enter the rest of knowing that we have been accepted by God. We enter the rest of God giving us His power through His Holy Spirit because we do not have power of our own. But if we do not accept Jesus we fall short of the rest God offers. We have rejected the good news of God's great love for us as shown in Jesus. The message we heard is of no value because we do not share the faith of those who obey God. Because of this we, like the Israelites, will not enter God's rest. God said that. God rested from His works in creation on the seventh day. Everything had been done in the first six days of creation so God at the end of the week rested from His works. That does not mean He went to sleep. He never does that because He is keeping an Eye on everything and everyone all the time. That is a comfort. God's rest is the rest of knowing everything has been done because He will never let us down. He does everything for us and all we have to do is accept it. However, the Israelites turned their backs on God's rest so He told them they would never enter it. In fact, the rest of their lives were difficult because they could never stay in one place for long as they wandered through the desert. They did not enter because of their disobedience. They hardened their hearts and people afterwards did the same. They did not enter God's rest because of their disobedience. The rest God offers us is a Sabbath rest where we rest from our works and accept what Jesus has done for us on the cross. If we do not enter this rrest we will perish because of our disobedience. And the Word of God is where we learn about these things, a Word which is alive active sharper than a double-edged sword penetrates to dividing soul and spirit, joint and marrow judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart And the Word of God is what God says, God from Whom nothing in creation can be hidden. He sees everything. So it is His Word that shows us our need of Jesus, the Great High Pries Who asecended to Heaven after He died and rose again. So once we have Jesus in our lives we need to hold firmly to the faith we profess. We do not do this alone because our High Priest, Jesus can empathise with our weaknesses because He was tempted in every way like this but did not sin. He is perfect. And we can approach the throne of grace of God confidently knowing that we will receive mercy when we sin and will be given grace to help in time of need. That is fantastic, is it not, knowing that Jesus will help us at all times and knowing He understands how we feel and empathises with our weaknesses. He went through everything we might go through. There is nothing He does not understand. He experienced these things. But He did not sin and He can help us not to sin as He gives us His Holy Spirit Who will enable us to live the way God wants. If we do sin Jesus intercedes at the right Hand of the Father for us. He does not condemn. Have you entered the rest God offers you through the acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ into your life? And if you have received Him are you continuing to live in His rest and depending on Him to enable you to do so?

| The Bible is the source of our knowledge of God. To know the Bible we need to read it but how do we know it’s true? If it is true what implication does that have for us? Let’s examine a couple of ways we can find out. If you have a Bible look up the passages which are mentioned and see for yourself. The Bible proves it is true within itself • Isaiah 52 verse 13 and Hosea 6 verses 1-2, written some 700 years before the birth of Jesus, tell us about Jesus rising from the dead, something which happened 700 years or so later • Isaiah 52 verses 14-15 and Isaiah 53 describes Jesus’ death on the cross, something which also happened some 700 years later • Many passages speak of Jesus’ birth. eg. Isaiah 7 verse 14; Isaiah 9 verses 6-7; Micah 5 verse 2 and many other places. All of them were written hundreds of years before Jesus was born • Psalm 22 describes Jesus’ death on the cross. Verse 18 tells how the soldiers divided Jesus’ garments among themselves and how they cast lots for his clothing. Those Roman soldiers certainly wouldn’t be au fait with the Bible. They just did it but David had prophesied it would happen a thousand years previously • Daniel 9 verse 25 tells us how long it would be before Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One) would come and it happened. Daniel wrote some five hundred years before Jesus was born. . The Bible is proved true by archaeology which includes the Dead Sea scrolls. The books of the Bible were copied laboriously by hand. Isaiah, written some seven hundred years before Jesus’ birth, was used as part of the canon of our present Bible. The Dead Sea scrolls found a manuscript of Isaiah which was four hundred years older and virtually identical. Try reading books on the subject. . The Bible is proved true historically. Many scholars try to prove otherwise but none of their arguments are convincing. Do email if you’re interested in reading books on the subject or if you want to discuss it or give your opinion. In view of the above shouldn’t we be getting to know what the message of the Bible is? Do we dare to ignore it? It stands to reason that God wouldn’t write a Book for us if He hadn’t something important to say? |
